Greetings, All!

Hope you all had a lovely long weekend! I spent Saturday morning recruiting future Hardrockers at the latest Go To Mines event for high school students and that evening we celebrated the 2022 graduates from the West River AHEC Scholars Program. The second cohort of this program graduated 4 Mines students/alumni and the 3rd cohort includes 3 current Mines students, 2 of which are your fellow BME classmates! There’s still time to apply to join the 4th cohort next summer, so if you want to learn more and apply, you can do so by checking out this website<https://www.westriversdahec.org/higher-education-students/sd-ahec-scholars/>.

As another reminder, I will be out of the office November 17th-28th because I’ll be off getting married and then honeymooning in Japan. So, there will not be a weekly update for next week and the update for the week of the 28th will probably be a day late. Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday break and we will see you just before December!

Continuing with our stories of Native American scientists and engineers for National Native American Heritage Month, today I want to tell you about Mary Golda Ross. Mary was a mathematician, engineer, and member of the Cherokee Nation who was born in Park Hill, Oklahoma. She earned her BS in math in 1928 and then finished her MS in 1938. During the great depression, she taught math and science in rural Oklahoma schools before taking jobs with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and latter a boarding school in Santa Fe, New Mexico. After the US joined WWII, she moved to California where she was hired to work for the Lockheed Corporation. She was the first known Native American female engineer and the first female engineer in the history of Lockheed, where she was one of the 40 founding engineers to work on the Skunk Works project, which was responsible for the design of several military aircrafts. Much of her work in the testing of rocket and missile system is still classified. She worked for NASA, where she helped to write the Planetary Flight Handbook and played a major role in getting the Apollo astronauts into space. She also worked on the Polaris reentry vehicle and on the Poseidon and Trident missiles.
