<p class="xmsonormal"><i><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">As we head into November, it’s a good time to start thinking about the things we are grateful for and that includes our rights to vote, our veterans, and the many native
cultures that inhabited these lands long before we were the U.S. of A. The month of November is Veterans & Military Family Month as well as National Native American Heritage Month, so I’ll be bringing you some stories of scientists/engineers belonging to one
or both of those important groups of Americans. Here’s the first one for you:<o:p></o:p></span></i></p>
<p class="xmsonormal"><i><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><o:p> </o:p></span></i></p>
<p class="xmsonormal"><i><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Susan La Flesche Picotte was a member of the Omaha Nation who was the first Native American woman to earn a medical degree (1889). Keep in mind that at this time women
were not allowed to vote and that as an “Indian”, she was not even considered to be a U.S. citizen. She graduated from the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania at the top of her class. She treated patients on the Omaha Reservation and later she ran her
own private practice in Bancroft, NE. In 1913, she opened a hospital in the reservation town of Walthill, NE, which now houses a museum dedicated to her life, her work, and the history of the Omaha and Winnebago tribes. You can learn more about her incredible
