Greetings, All!

I hope you all had a lovely break and were able to get out and enjoy the nice weather, especially yesterday! My husband and I visited the Reptile Gardens and took our doggos out for a hike to see the Stratobowl. (I recommend both if you haven’t seen them!) This is a busy week for showcasing the hard work of student researchers and seniors (today and Thursday, respectively), so good luck/break a leg to everyone presenting their work and if you aren’t participating in either event this year, be sure to swing by to check out what others are doing and to support your friends/colleagues!

As a reminder, April is Alcohol Awareness<https://alcohol.org/awareness-month/>, and Stress Awareness<https://hr.nih.gov/working-nih/civil/national-stress-awareness-month> month, so here’s an article from the Mayo Clinic about healthy ways to manage stress<https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/stress-management/in-depth/stress-relievers/art-20047257>.

We will also be celebrating Earth Day<https://www.earthday.org/> on the 22nd and Gathering of Nations<https://www.gatheringofnations.com/> will be happening the 27th-29th.

There are exciting opportunities for you and fun things happening this week and beyond. Check them out below!

     * Abstract: Eye-gaze and gesture recognition devices are becoming more commonly used in everyday computing activities, especially for those at work. ANSI/HFES 100-2007 is the human factors and ergonomics standard for the design of computer workstations, and it contains several design criteria for the physical layout of the workspace for computer users. One goal of this research is to determine whether revisions to this standard are necessary to adequately incorporate these contact-free input devices. Another goal of the research is to access the risk of MSDs in using the contact free devices and compare those risks to the risks of mouse and keyboard. To determine this, a motion-capture study was performed on37 volunteers (21 male / 16 female) from students from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Subjects were observed using a LEAP Motion Controller (gesture recognition) and a Tobii EyeX controller (gaze interaction) as well as a keyboard and mouse, while performing three common computing tasks (spreadsheet entry, web browsing, simple game playing). The results reveal that while often the participants did stay within ideal posture parameters defined by ANSI 100-2007 and the RULA posture assessment tool, they often reported increased fatigue from LEAP and expressed a greater degree of movement within the elbows and shoulders. For the EyeX, increased neck activity due to the distance of the monitor was also expressed. From this, it is recommended that ANSI/HFES 100-2007 modify its recommended workstation layout when these devices are used to account for the extra space needed for the hands as well as the significant head movement which may affect viewing distances to computer displays.
