Hello,

This email is an invitation for you to participate in a research study to be conducted in the Human Factors Laboratory on the SD Mines campus by graduate students and faculty members in biomedical and industrial engineering.  You were invited to participate because you are an SD Mines student who is of 18 years or older. The study is entitled Utilization of an NMES and EMG system for the observation of the transition to fatigue state, and it will be conducted by M.S. student Brock Folkers under the supervision of Dr. Adam Piper.  Participants will be asked to wear electromyography (EMG) electrodes on their skin to measure their muscle activity in one arm during short durations of simple exercise.  In between measurements, a Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulator (NMES) will be placed on the muscles to simulate muscle fatigue while the participant sits for 10-20 minute periods. The goal of the study is to learn how muscle tissue changes its electrical signal as it transitions from rested to fatigue states. Your participation in the study is completely voluntary, and if you decide to participate, you may withdraw at any time.  All EMG records will be recorded anonymously, and no personal information will be attached to the data.  If you have an implanted medical device (e.g. pacemaker, glucose monitor) or a health condition for which small-dose neuromuscular electrical stimulation is to be avoided, you should not participate.
