Good Morning, All!
Hope you all had a nice weekend and are staying warm this morning. 😊 Lots of deadlines for scholarships, internships, and other opportunities are fast-approaching over the next few weeks, so be sure to get your materials/applications in for things of interest to you! We also have the Career Fair coming up so, so dust off those resumes, pull out your best professional clothing, and practice introducing yourself to someone who might have a professional opportunity for you. Remember that there are lots of resources on campus to help you prep for the fair, so take advantage to help you put your best foot forward in the coming weeks. Feel free to stop by my office or schedule an appointment if you need help connecting to resources or just a little pep talk (or some candy) to help you get motivated. 😝

* Employment/Internship Opportunities:
* For those of you looking for direct patient care experiences, Janice Knutsen is looking for a part-time live-in or non-live-in caretaker for her adult son with disabilities. She partners with Black Hills Works to provide care for her son and several of our pre-health students have worked for her in the past. Job duties, pay, benefits, and contact information can be found on the attached flyers.
* Other Professional Development Opportunities:
* Are you a member of a professional organization, such as the Biophysical Society<https://www.biophysics.org/>, the Biomedical Engineering Society<https://www.bmes.org/>, or the Society for Biomaterials<https://biomaterials.org/>? * South Dakota Biotech sponsors the South Dakota FAST Launch program, which has a series of events coming up (see attached FAST flyer). Learn more and register for these events by going here<https://www.sdbio.org/fast>.
* Monument Health is now allowing South Dakota Mines students to shadow again (as long as you have proof of vaccinations for both COVID-19 and this season’s flu). Ask Dr. J for more information if interested!
* West River Area Health Education Center (WRAHEC) Scholars Program applications are now open. This is a great program for anyone interested in learning more about rural healthcare and/or anyone planning to practice in rural/medically underserved areas. – Learn more and apply by going here<https://www.westriversdahec.org/higher-education-students/sd-ahec-scholars/>.
* MEDLIFE is a non-profit organization providing service learning experiences in Peru, Ecuador, and Tanzania. They make trips over winter break, spring break, and during the summer to accommodate student schedules. See attached flyer or go here<https://my.medlifemovement.org/> for more details.
* Applications are open for the Killam Fellowship for undergraduates interested in study abroad opportunities. Learn more and apply before the January 31st deadline by going here<https://www.fulbright.ca/uploads/pdf/applications/killam/2022/KillamInstructionsUS.pdf?v=3>.
* Applications are now open for the CDC funded RISE UP (Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement Undergraduate Program), which is a summer internship for rising seniors, juniors, and recent graduates. (See attachments.) The deadline to apply is January 31st, 2022.
* The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM) is hosting a 6-week Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program to provide research opportunities for undergraduates interested in careers in medicine and research. The program provides a living allowance and those who complete the program will be eligible for a guaranteed interview. The deadline to apply is February 1st. * The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM) is hosting a 5-week Summer Scholars program for underrepresented or educationally/economically disadvantaged students. The program replicates the experience of a first-year student in their program and features coursework in various medical sciences, workshops on admissions to OU-HCOM, study skills, time management, etc., and provides a living allowance. Those who complete the program will be eligible for a guaranteed interview. The deadline to apply is February 15th. * Applications for UCLA’s Pre-Medical Enrichment Program (PREP), which was created to help pre-med students from disadvantaged backgrounds strengthen their backgrounds for applying to medical school, are now open. * The Career and Professional Development Center (CPDC) kicks off Resume Review Week ahead of our Spring 2022 Career Fair. Have the CPDC check out your resume anytime between 8AM-4PM this week!
* Deadline for applications for the CDC’s Public Health Associate Program (PHAP). PHAP is a paid, two-year, competency-based, training program with CDC for early-career public professionals with little to no public health experience. Youth in Science Rapid City is hosting their annual Women in Science Conference in March (from 8:00AM-3:00PM on the 15th & 16th) and are looking for volunteers to lead groups, monitor buildings, and serve as speakers or exhibitors. Talk to Dr. J if you are interested or would like to know more.
* Campus deadline for applying for the Boren Award<https://www.borenawards.org/> (study abroad)
* 7:30AM-8:30AM MST – Monument Health Virtual Grand Rounds. * The Sanford PROMISE Community Lecture Series will host two public events via Zoom:
* March 24th – Dr. Nathan Skelly will present 3D printing technology in orthopedic surgery
* Stanford University’s Minority Medical Alliance is hosting their annual conference (SUMMA) virtually on February 5th, 2022. The SUMMA Conference “serves to educate conference attendees regarding careers in medicine and allied health careers” and will include “pre-med information sessions, inspirational keynote speakers, a medical school exhibit hall with over 80 partners, networking opportunities, social activities, and more”. * Rush University is hosting several informational sessions about their MS program in Medical Laboratory Sciences throughout the Spring semester. (See attachment.)
