Good Morning, All!

I hope you had a lovely weekend and are ready to tackle this week. Apparently, it’s National Fettuccine Alfredo Day, so go carb-load and enjoy one of my personal favorites! (It’s good with chicken or shrimp and try it with veggies like broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, peas, and/or mushrooms.) 😊

  *   Volunteer Opportunities:
     *   BME graduate student, Brock Folkers, is looking for participants to take part in a research study exploring how muscle tissue changes its electrical signal as it transitions from rested to fatigue states.      *   MEDLIFE is a non-profit organization providing service learning experiences in Peru, Ecuador, and Tanzania.      *   Judges are needed for the 67th Annual High Plains Regional Science & Engineering Fair on Tuesday, March 22nd.      *   The Avera Center for Pediatric and Community Research is hiring two summer interns.      *   For those of you looking for direct patient care experiences, Janice Knutsen is looking for a part-time live-in or non-live-in caretaker for her adult son with disabilities. She partners with Black Hills Works to provide care for her son and several of our pre-health students have worked for her in the past.      *   Monument Health is now allowing South Dakota Mines students to shadow again (as long as you have proof of vaccinations for both COVID-19 and this season’s flu). Ask Dr. J for more information if interested!
     *   West River Area Health Education Center (WRAHEC) Scholars Program applications are now open.      *   South Dakota Biotech sponsors the South Dakota FAST Launch program, which has a series of events coming up (see attached FAST flyer). Learn more and register for these events by going here<https://www.sdbio.org/fast>.
     *   The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM) is hosting a 5-week Summer Scholars program for underrepresented or educationally/economically disadvantaged students. The program replicates the experience of a first-year student in their program and features coursework in various medical sciences, workshops on admissions to OU-HCOM, study skills, time management, etc., and provides a living allowance. Those who complete the program will be eligible for a guaranteed interview. The deadline to apply is February 15th.      *   Applications for UCLA’s Pre-Medical Enrichment Program (PREP), which was created to help pre-med students from disadvantaged backgrounds strengthen their backgrounds for applying to medical school, are now open.
