BuG ReMeDEE Team Lands $6 Million Grant to Study Microbes of the Methane Cycle in Extreme Environments

Researchers at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology have been awarded a $6 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF)<https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1736255> to study the range of microbes that consume methane in deep and extreme environments.This research will help scientists better understand the climatological impact of methane generated under places like Yellowstone and in other geothermic and fossil fuel beds. Researchers will also study how some of these microbes can be used to convert methane into useable products and materials.

SD Mines has received a $1.1 million donation over a six-year period for Hardrocker men’s basketball, women’s basketball and men’s and women’s cross country athletic scholarships. The funds will also provide for a new scoreboard in the King Center.

SD Mines hosted 150 employers for the annual fall Career Fair<http://www.sdsmt.edu/Campus-Life/Career-Center/Career-Fair/>. This is the largest number of employers to attend a career fair at Mines. Over 1,000 Mines students took part.

The Apex Gallery at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology features the work of Jan Hall, aka. Jan DeVore in a new exhibit open to the public from now until Oct. 27, 2017. These paintings are large and expansive, exquisitely rich with layering, texture and subtle color.

Night at the Museum
October 28

SD Mines hosts Night at the Museum, Saturday October 28, from noon-4 p.m. at the Museum of Geology (third floor of O'Harra building at SD Mines campus). This free event, geared towards children of all ages, provides hands-on educational activities focused on fossils and paleontology. Candy will be handed out by student volunteers.

Dark Matter Day Panel
October 30, 5 p.m.

SD Mines Physics Instructor Michael Dowding joins grad students Daniel Moore and James Haiston Jr. to discuss dark matter and how it fits into pop culture. The event will be held at the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center in Lead, SD. A social begins at 5 p.m.; the program follows at 6 p.m. Wear your best dark matter costume and you could win a prize!
