Spring Commencement
May 6

The Mines 2017 Spring Commencement begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 6, in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Ice Arena. The event is open to the public. The commencement ceremony is also streamed live online for those who cannot attend in person. Attorney General Marty Jackley is the commencement speaker.

The public is invited to Mount Rushmore for the Army ROTC consolidated commissioning ceremony for graduating cadets from the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, Black Hills State University, and Chadron State College.

Math Prep Available for Incoming Freshmen
Summer 2017

A new distance program is available for all incoming freshmen to bolster critical math-readiness skills. The free MathSpark program involves online self-study review courses, mentorship by Mines faculty members, summer lectures, and math labs.

67th annual West River Math Contest
May 8

Students from South Dakota K-12 schools are invited to participate in this competition, held from 9:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. in the King Center. The contest consists of a fifty-minute test followed by a twenty-minute test. Divisions include: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Advanced Math, and Masters. Prizes will be awarded in each class to the top five in each division. The exception is in the Master's Division, which will have only one prize, to be awarded to the top scorer.

SD Mines Conference on Science at SURF
May 12-16

SD Mines hosts the "Conference on Science at the Sanford Underground Research Facility" to address scientific research related to the laboratory in nearby Lead, S.D. Mines scientists are involved in five high-level research projects being conducted or planned a mile underground at the Sanford Laboratory, which could lead to a better understanding of the origins and make-up of the universe. The event is open to the public but participants must register to attend.

Free Seminars at the World Programming Contest

The ICPC includes a set of seminars from 9:30 a.m.-noon and 1:30-4 p.m., Sunday, May 21, in the Rapid City Civic Center theater. The seminars are free and open to the public. Speakers include a list of world-class programmers, entrepreneurs, and innovators.

International Colligate Programing Contest

The ICPC includes top collegiate programmers from more than seventy countries around the world competing to solve the most problems in the allotted amount of time. The contest includes a team from SD Mines. The Rapid City Civic Center Ice Arena opens for public seating at 7:30 a.m., and the contest runs from 8:10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Mines offers several summer athletic camps, tournaments, and workshops for a wide range of youth. . A number of basketball tournaments and camps take place for varying ages and skill levels from May through late July.

STEM Summer Camps
June & July

Registration is open for the 2017 Mines summer camps. Students in grades 9-12 are invited to live on campus for a week to immerse in hands-on learning on topics such as civil engineering, explosives, paleontology, and 3D printing. Explore our summer camps webpage to learn more about all eleven camps. Field trips to Mount Rushmore and other Black Hills attractions are built into the week.
