NASA Grant: Continuing Ed for Teachers, Astronomy for Students
April 28-29

This two-day workshop allows K-12 math and science teachers to learn about math applications used in astronomy and space exploration, with the goal of being able to use that knowledge in their own classrooms. Through carefully selected materials, the workshop will emphasize the connections between mathematics and space science. The workshop is one of three funded through a new NASA grant awarded to SD Mines to promote STEM education by using astronomy to engage teachers and students in math. Two more two-day workshops are offered in October 2017 and March 2018. Tuition is paid in full by the grant funds. Each workshop can accommodate a maximum of fifteen teachers. Registration is open to students and teachers from Rapid City and neighboring school districts. Math professors will lead the program, the result of a request among teachers for professional development opportunities through the university.
