Apex Highlights ‘DakotaScapes’
Through December 2

The eclectic exhibit “DakotaScapes” featuring the works of four painters is on display at the Apex Gallery through Dec. 2. The opening reception is from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, with a gallery talk at 6 p.m. Regular gallery hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. There is no charge. The public is invited to hear Diana Peninger, vice president of the $2 billion Acetyl Intermediates business at Celanese, speak at 4 p.m. in the Christensen Hall of Fame in the King Center. The South Dakota Mines alumna will discuss her experiences in leadership. There is no charge.

Public invited to ChemE talks
Beginning November 8

The Chemical & Biological Engineering Speaker Series this year features research scientists and doctors from throughout the nation addressing topics such as energy conversion/generation, nanomaterials, biomedical engineering, and the Earth’s climate. All events are from 11 a.m.-noon in room 252 of the Electrical Engineering & Physics Building and are open to the public. Remaining sessions this semester are: Nov. 8 – Dr. Dan Hill of Texas A&M on petroleum engineering; Nov. 15 – Dr. Martin Kocanda of the Rapid City Police Department on resolving fingerprints; Nov. 29 – Max Lampert from Darmstadt University on polyethylene plant design.

Miniature Steel Bridges
November 8-16

The public is invited to view miniature steel bridge designs of civil engineering students. Students in the introduction to engineering class have designed and constructed miniature bridges, which will be tested for strength after the display week. Bridges will be displayed throughout the day on the second floor hallway of the Civil & Mechanical Engineering Building.

Veterans Day Event
November 10

The public is invited to a Veterans Day salute hosted at 10:30 a.m. outside the main entrance of the Surbeck Center, where a flag will be raised to honor 130 student veterans. Following the Honor Guard presentation a program will be held in the lower level of the Surbeck Center. Additionally, the university is running a care package drive for deployed students and staff. Items may be brought to the salute or any time before. Items sought include: beef jerky, sunflower seeds, non-melting candy, playing cards, ramen, popcorn, powdered drink mix, energy bars, MIO energy, gum, foot powder, baby wipes, socks, mechanix gloves, snacks, magazines, puzzle books, calling cards, notes and hand warmers.

Student Food Drive
November 10

Lambda Chi Alpha is partnering with Alpha Omega Epsilon to conduct a food drive throughout neighborhoods in Rapid City. On Thursday, Nov. 3, they will visit parts of town not covered during the recent Trick or Treat for Canned Goods event to deliver plastic bags. They will return Thursday, Nov. 10, between noon-3 p.m. to pick up the bags with canned food or monetary donations for Feeding South Dakota.

Extra Life Gaming Marathon
November 12-13

The Gamers for Service team will host the Extra Life 2016 gaming marathon from 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, through noon Sunday, Nov. 13, on campus to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network. The goal for the 25-hour marathon on campus this year is to raise $3,000. Nationally, 55,000 gamers participate and raise over $8 million annually. The event will be held in the lecture hall of the Electrical Engineering & Physics Building, room 252. The public is invited to play games with us and help heal children.

Military Appreciation Night
November 12

South Dakota Mines will honor the service of those who serve our country as we host Military Appreciation Night at the Western State Colorado University football game. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. in O’Harra Stadium. Veterans, active duty personnel and their families get in free to the game, with free tailgating provided by the Veterans Club.

Fall & Holiday Music Concerts
November 18 & December 3, 4, 5

The School of Mines music program will offer four fall and holiday music concerts. The public is invited. All events are free. The University Orchestra and Brass Choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, in the Music Center on campus. The annual Holiday at the Cathedral Concert featuring the Master Chorale, University Choir and Concert Choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, and Sunday, Dec. 4., at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral, 520 Cathedral Drive in Rapid City. The Holiday Band Concert featuring the Symphonic Band and Jazz Band is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, in the Music Center. Kid Rockers Camp
November 19

The ‘Kid Rockers’ Basketball Camp is open for boys and girls in kindergarten through sixth grade from 10-11:30 a.m. in the King Center. The Hardrocker Men’s Basketball Team players and coaches will offer instruction in basketball skills. Participants get a T-shirt and basketball and are invited back to participate in a “ball handling” show at halftime of the 6 p.m. Hardrocker vs Johnson & Wales University game. The cost is $25 for one child, $40 for a family with two participating children and $50 for a family with three. For additional details, call Eric Glenn at 355-3024. Diwali Celebrates Peace
November 19

The India Club invites the public to celebrate Diwali Night, featuring cultural foods, entertainment, and a fireworks show. The 27th annual event will be 5-8 p.m.in the Surbeck Center ballroom. The event is free and open to the public. The evening begins with cultural dances at 5 p.m. A fireworks display in the Surbeck/McLaury parking lot will begin at 7 p.m., followed by authentic foods prepared by the 40 Indian students enrolled at Mines.

Parade of Trees Gets ‘Frosty’
December 7

“A Frosty Kind of Holiday” is the theme for this year’s Parade of Tree, which will feature holiday trees decorated by student organizations and offices from throughout the School of Mines. The public is invited to the display from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Surbeck Center ballroom and will get the chance to vote on their favorite tree. Additionally, gingerbread creations designed and built by student groups and sponsored by Women in Science and Engineering will be displayed. The event is free, and the public is asked to donate canned goods to benefit the campus student food pantry, which is low on supplies to help feed students in need.

Tuesdays Fall & Spring

Hardrocker fans are invited to weekly luncheons to hear updates from the athletic director and sports coaches. Luncheons will be at noon Tuesdays in the Christensen Hall of Fame room unless otherwise posted. There will be an opportunity for a Q&A with each coach. Lunches cost $5 on site. Luncheons are held year-round and are sponsored by the Hardrock Club. If you can’t attend, watch live online through our live broadcasting!

Check out our new Hardrocker Athletics webpage and home schedules for all of our home games this fall. Athletics teams playing during the fall semester are football, basketball, volleyball, cross country, golf, and soccer. The track and field season kicks off in December.
